Sponsors Increase Impact of Sean’s Run

March 18, 2007 – Sean’s Run, a community run/walk, founded at the suggestion of a group of Chatham High School students in 2002 to memorialize one of their classmates who died in a car crash, has become one of the region’s better known activities bringing awareness to the problems of underage drinking, impaired driving and teenagers’ under use of seatbelts.

And the Organizers credit the support and generosity of event sponsors for helping expand the impact of Sean’s Run. Over 800 runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are expected to register for the 6th annual event on Sunday, April 29 at Chatham High School.

“Thanks to our sponsors, Sean’s Run is more than a great one-day event that includes a 5K and 1 Mile run / walk, a Prevention Education Expo, a Tribute to Victims and Survivors of drunk driving and the World Championship Battle of the Belts. The impact of this event is felt year-round through the many youth programs we support using the money raised at Sean’s Run,” said General Chairman Jeff French, an uncle of Sean French for whom the event is named.

Proceeds from past Sean’s Runs have supported 38 programs in Columbia County and around the capital district that are developed to steer young people away from drinking and impaired driving. Also, moneys raised at the inaugural Sean’s Run helped endow a scholarship fund that has benefited 34 students.

First Niagara Bank, for the second year, is the Presenting Sponsor for the 6th Annual Sean’s Run and all of its associated activities. Employees of First Niagara Bank, from it’s extensive network of branches located across New York State, have also offered to help as volunteers during the event on April 29 at Chatham High School which attracts participants from all over the region.

FairPoint Communications, another annual sponsor, is the 5K Sponsor. As one of the largest rural telephone providers in the U.S., FairPoint operates 31 local exchange companies in 18 states. They have offices in Chatham providing both telephone and internet service.

Group Health Incorporated, has again joined the sponsorship line-up as Major Benefactor. GHI, and it’s subsidiary GHI HMO, provide health coverage and administrative services to more than 2.6 million individuals, including active employees, their dependents, and retirees.

Newkirk, an Albany-based provider of marketing communications for financial and healthcare companies, has again signed on to be designated as SeansMile Sponsor, the 1 mile youth race for youngsters 12 and under.

Rensselaer Honda, the Honda dealership of Troy, is sponsoring the second annual World Championship Battle of the Belts. This is an interscholastic seatbelt buckling competition designed to increase safety belt use by teens and is expected to attract dozens of schools from throughout the capital region. Car wrecks are the number one cause of death for teens and nearly 2/3 of those who perish were unbuckled.

Four local businesses which have been affiliated with Sean’s Run since its commencement are continuing their commitment as Gold Medal Sponsors for the 6th consecutive year. They include:

Columbia Memorial Hospital, which serves more than 100,000 residents of Columbia, Greene and Dutchess Counties through its 192-bed acute care facility, 120-bed long term care site and nine primary care centers

Blass Communications of Old Chatham designs integrated marketing and communications programs that help companies successfully build brand recognition. Trowbridge Farms, owned by Phil and Annie Trowbridge who are innovative Angus cattle breeding leaders, is located in Ghent.
